About Fernando

Associate Professor Fernando Jerez serves in the UWA School of Design, Discipline of Architecture, at the University of Western Australia, holding the position of Graduate Research Coordinator. An accomplished architect, he is the founding partner of SMAR Architecture Studio, with offices in Perth and Madrid. Jerez earned his PhD Summa Cum Laude with International Honors from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM), Technical University of Madrid (UPM) in 2013, graduated from ETSAM UPM, and studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture. His academic career includes lecturing at ETSAM UPM, ESAYT, and UWA, as well as serving on juries at the Architectural Association and The Bartlett (UCL). He has delivered lectures and participated in panels across Australia, Europe, and the USA.

Jerez's research examines the interplay between architecture, technology, and society, employing near-future scenarios as tools to provoke discourse on urban and social challenges via design and emerging technologies, with a focus on Architectural Design and Environmental Design. He has garnered over 20 international awards, including the First Prize COAM 2025, Best Public Building 2025, nomination for EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture 2025, and First Prize in the Urban Confluence Silicon Valley International Competition (2021) from 963 teams across 72 countries. Notable projects include the Science Island Museum in Kaunas, currently under construction. His scholarly output encompasses 60 items, including peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and design works such as "Benefits of a Novel Hybrid Storage System for Self-Sufficiency of Solar Homes Connected to Stand-Alone Remote Grid Networks: a Case Study of Perth, Western Australia" (2026, submitted, with Kaji Esfahani et al.), "Puertas Abiertas" (2026), "Essay on Light: Matter, History, and Art" (2025), and "ARTE ET ALIA: Espacios de Luz desde el Color en la Sala Valente" (2025). Jerez's work has been featured in international media like Forbes, Dezeen, Archdaily, and journals such as AV, Architectural Review, A’A’, L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, Bauwelt, and exhibited at prestigious venues including the American Institute of Architects (AIA NY), Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and Kunsthalle Helsinki. He serves on the scientific committee and as a reviewer for the Criticall International Conference on Architectural Design and Criticism.
