About Florien

Dr. Florien Boele is an Associate Professor of Medical Psychology and Yorkshire Cancer Research University Academic Fellow in the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds. She earned her PhD in Medical Psychology from VU University Amsterdam in 2015, along with an MSc in Clinical Neuropsychology and a BSc in Psychology. After completing her doctorate, Boele received a Niels Stensen Fellowship, which supported her roles as a visiting research scholar at the University of Pittsburgh and the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh from 2015 to 2016. She joined the University of Leeds in 2016, where her position is shared between the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences Academic Unit of Health Economics and the Leeds Institute of Medical Research Patient Centred Outcomes Group. Her academic background in neuropsychology informs her expertise in observational and intervention studies using qualitative and quantitative methods.

Boele's research centers on family caregiving, quality of life, symptom management, and patient-reported outcomes in neuro-oncology, with a focus on brain tumours, glioma, and support for vulnerable groups. Key publications include 'Dismantling, optimising, and personalising internet cognitive behavioural therapy for depression: a systematic review and component network meta-analysis using individual participant data' (The Lancet Psychiatry, 2021), 'The effect of modafinil on fatigue, cognitive functioning, and mood in primary brain tumor patients: a multicenter randomized controlled trial' (Neuro-oncology, 2013), 'Psychiatric symptoms in glioma patients: from diagnosis to management' (Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment, 2015), and 'Enhancing quality of life and mastery of informal caregivers of high-grade glioma patients: a randomized controlled trial' (Journal of Neuro-Oncology, 2013). She serves as Associate Editor for Neuro-Oncology Practice and holds positions on the EANO Scientific Committee, EANO Disparity Committee, NCRI Psychosocial Oncology & Survivorship Clinical Studies Group, and NCRI Brain Supportive and Palliative Care Subgroup. Boele is involved in the Cochrane Collaboration, EORTC Quality of Life Group, and other professional societies. She teaches on the MBChB Research, Evaluation and Special Studies module and supervises PhD and DClinPsy students.
