Professor Francesco Mancini is a Professor in the School of Design and the Built Environment, Faculty of Humanities at Curtin University, serving also as Dean International for the Faculty and Deputy Head of School. He is a registered Architect, Landscape Architect, and Planner in Italy. Mancini holds a PhD from the University of Florence on Peter Eisenman's architectural design theory, an MArch, and a BArch. He joined Curtin University in May 2015, having previously taught at the University of Roma Tre since 1998 and served as an instructor with Peter Eisenman at The Cooper Union in 1998-1999. As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), he teaches Architectural and Urban Design in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Mancini's research focuses on urban sustainable design, building typology, adaptive reuse, design processes, and history and theory of architecture. His methodologies include historical research, cognitive mapping, case studies, comparative and statistical analysis. Ongoing projects address medium-high density social and affordable housing as sustainable urban development, the urban role of heritage in contemporary cities, and urban morphology in colonial cities. Notable publications include 'Future City, Digital Twinning and the Urban Realm: A Systematic Literature Review' (2022), 'Assessing Geo-Typical Techniques for Modeling Buildings Using Thermal Simulations' (2022), 'Quantifying the Impact of Urban Infill on the Urban Heat Island Effect – A Case Study for an Alternative Medium Density Model' (2021), 'Experiential and Integrated Learning Environments – Teaching Urban Design Studio at Curtin University' (2020), 'IN-BETWEEN Crossing the Thresholds of the Urban Skin' (2020), 'From Time to Time: A Constructivist Approach to Sociality in Learning' (2018), 'Void of Power' (2017), and 'Material (re)contextualization: goal establishment in means-oriented architectural design' (2016). He contributed to the 2021 Curtin Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching (CEIT) for Programs that Enhance Learning and the 2021 Curtinnovation Awards in the Faculty of Humanities category as part of teams. Mancini delivers public lectures on architectural education, urban design, and related topics.
