About Frank

Frank den Hartog is a Professor holding the Cisco Research Chair in Critical Infrastructure at the University of Canberra and an Adjunct Fellow at UNSW Canberra in the School of Engineering and Information Technology. He earned a PhD in physics from Leiden University in 1998 and an MSc in applied physics from Eindhoven University of Technology in 1992. Prior to his current roles, he served as Associate Professor and Deputy Head of School (Education) at UNSW Canberra. From 2003 to 2016, he was a Senior Scientist at the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), researching Future Internet architectures and heterogeneous consumer networking. Earlier, at the Dutch telecommunications operator KPN, he pioneered home networking and IoT research. Between 2012 and 2016, he chaired the Technical Working Group of the worldwide Home Gateway Initiative (HGI) industry consortium and managed numerous large collaborative research projects under the European Framework Programme Horizon 2020.

His research specializations include cyber security of critical infrastructures, complex wireless networked systems research and analysis, Internet of Things (IoT), and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), with interests in programmable networks, digital twins, 6G, physical layer security, and standardization. He has co-authored 90 peer-reviewed articles, including 'FedHome: A federated learning framework for smart home device classification and attack detection by broadband service providers' (Computer Networks, 2026), 'UNSW HomeNet: A network traffic flow dataset for AI-based smart home device classification' (Computers and Industrial Engineering, 2025), and 'On Trust Recommendations in the Social Internet of Things - A Survey' (ACM Computing Surveys, 2024). He has filed 23 patent applications, made 67 contributions to standardization bodies, and co-edited 7 international telecommunications standards. His innovations in home networking have won several academic and industry awards. Den Hartog has supervised 7 Masters and Honours students and 2 PhD students, served on 8 PhD examination committees, numerous conference program committees, and delivered recurrent IEEE tutorials at the International IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference. He has also been a guest lecturer at various European universities and a tutor at the Australian National University.
