Fraser Jopson serves as a Professional Practice Fellow in the School of Surveying at the University of Otago, where he lectures on land development engineering, project management, construction management, and professional practice. He earned his Bachelor of Surveying with Distinction in 1997 and Bachelor of Commerce in Economics in 1998, both from the University of Otago. A Licensed Cadastral Surveyor and Member of New Zealand Institute of Surveyors, Jopson began his professional career in private practice on the Kapiti Coast at Landlink in Waikanae, achieving Licensed Cadastral Surveyor status in 2001. In 2002, he relocated to Dunedin and worked with D.G. Hatfields and Associates on subdivision and land development projects, including resource planning and project management. He joined the School of Surveying in 2004, integrating his industry expertise into teaching and student support.
Jopson's teaching includes coordinating and lecturing SURV204 Land Development Engineering 2, SURV298 Introductory Field Camp, SURV299 Second Year Field Camp, SURV399 Third Year Field Camp, PMAN401 Project Management, SURV450 Professional Practice, SURV460 Construction Management, SURV499 Vacation Experience, and PMAN501 Advanced Project Management. His interests encompass land development, project management, professional practice, cadastral surveying, and photogrammetry. In 2022, as part of the School of Surveying Student Wellbeing and Support Team with Kelly Gragg, Christina Hulbe, and Emily Tidey, he received the University of Otago Health, Safety and Wellbeing Award for a seminar series since 2018 promoting student mental health, workload management, balance, and community. He chairs the Coastal Otago Branch of Survey and Spatial New Zealand, serves on the Licensed Practitioners Management Society board, and contributed to the laser scanning of Moriori dendroglyphs on the Chatham Islands.
