Rate My Professor Guy Aitchison

Dr Guy Aitchison is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Studies at Loughborough University. He completed undergraduate studies in History at Queens’ College, Cambridge, followed by an MA in Legal and Political Theory and a PhD in Political Philosophy at University College London in 2015, supervised by Cécile Laborde and Richard Bellamy. Before joining Loughborough University as a Lecturer in Politics and International Studies in 2019 and advancing to Senior Lecturer in 2023, he held a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellowship at the European University Institute in Florence from 2015 to 2016 and a Government of Ireland postdoctoral fellowship at University College Dublin from 2016 to 2018. He previously taught for one year in the Philosophy department at King’s College London and worked as a researcher and campaigner for NGOs including the Joseph Rowntree Trust’s Power 2010 and openDemocracy.

His research specializations include theories of human rights, social justice, the ethics of resistance and migration. Aitchison has published peer-reviewed articles in leading journals such as The Journal of Political Philosophy (2021 on hunger strikes), Political Studies (2021 on immigration law and resistance), Perspectives on Politics (2018 on domination and disobedience), and The Journal of Politics (2023 on suicide and structural harms). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and serves as Principal Investigator on Leverhulme Trust-funded projects including ‘The Right to Liveability: An Ethical Assessment’ and ‘Starving for Dignity: Re-framing the Ethics of Hunger Strikes’. He convenes Loughborough’s Ethics in Public Life research group, has contributed to media outlets including openDemocracy and The Conversation, and welcomes PhD supervision in political theory, political philosophy and applied ethics.
