Geeta Verma is a professor of STEM education in the School of Education & Human Development at the University of Colorado Denver. She earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Science Education from Kent State University, an M.Ed. in Science Education focusing on Curriculum Development and Evaluation from the University of Delhi, a B.Ed. in Science Teaching for Middle and High Schools from the University of Delhi, an M.Sc. in Entomology from the University of Delhi, and a B.Sc. in Zoology, Botany, and Chemistry from the University of Delhi. Her career spans over 25 years as a classroom teacher, researcher, and teacher educator. She began as Head of the Biology Department and Science Teacher at The Shri Ram School in New Delhi from 1992 to 1997, followed by Assistant Professor positions at Loyola University Chicago from 2001 to 2003 and Georgia State University from 2003 to 2010, including tenure as Associate Professor. She served as Visiting Professor at Azim Premji University in India and Stockholm University in Sweden. Joining the University of Colorado Denver in 2010 as Associate Professor of Science Education, she was promoted to full Professor in 2019.
Verma's research interests include science education, STEM education, curriculum discourse, informal STEM learning, and the applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in STEM education and student success. As an intercultural and international scholar, she examines the design of imaginative and innovative learning environments across formal and informal STEM contexts. Her key publications include the edited book "Science Education in India: Philosophical, Historical, and Contemporary Conversations" (2019), "Critical Mass in the Teacher Education Academy: Symbiosis and Diversity" (2014), and monograph "Science and Society in the Classroom: Using Sociocultural Perspectives to Develop Science Education" (2009). She has published articles in high-impact journals such as the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and Journal of Science Teacher Education, with recent works including "Navigating Opportunities and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence: ChatGPT and Generative Models in Science Teacher Education" (2023) and "Onto-epistemological Realities and Assumptions Beyond Western Science" (2023). Her research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and other agencies. Awards include the 2017 University-Wide Faculty Mentoring Award from the University of Colorado Denver and the 2016-2017 Women’s Fellowship Award from Stockholm University. She served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Science Teacher Education from 2019 to 2024, past Associate Editor for the Journal of Research in Science Teaching, and reviewer for several journals. Verma regularly presents at international and national conferences and delivers keynote addresses and invited talks.
