Gelu Popescu is a Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics, College of Sciences, at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Texas A&M University, an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Bucharest, and a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Timisoara. His research focuses on analysis, operator algebras, and operator theory, including functional analysis, noncommutative multivariable operator theory, noncommutative harmonic analysis, and interpolation. Popescu specializes in operator algebras and operator theory, contributing to advancements in noncommuting operators, isometric dilations, Poisson transforms, and multivariable operator models.
Since joining UTSA around 1994, Popescu has maintained an exceptionally productive career, publishing approximately three research papers annually in leading journals such as Advances in Mathematics, Journal of Functional Analysis, Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, Mathematische Annalen, Journal für die Reine und Angewandte Mathematik, and Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences. He has authored three monographs through the Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society, including Unitary Invariants in Multivariable Operator Theory (2009). Among his highly cited works are Isometric Dilations for Infinite Sequences of Noncommuting Operators (1989, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 341 citations), On Bohr's Inequality (2002, Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, 223 citations), Von Neumann Inequality for (B(H)^n)_1 (1991, Mathematica Scandinavica, 218 citations), and Multi-Analytic Operators on Fock Spaces (1995, Mathematische Annalen, 189 citations). His groundbreaking research in operator theory has been frequently cited by prominent mathematicians, including Fields Medalists, establishing significant influence in the field. Popescu was inducted into the UTSA Academy of Distinguished Researchers in 2018 and received the UTSA Research Achievement Award in 2003.
