Professor Gemma Figtree is a Professor in Medicine at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Sydney Medical School (Northern) and the Northern Clinical School. She is an interventional cardiologist at Royal North Shore Hospital and Research Lead for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Health at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research. Figtree holds an MBBS from the University of Sydney and a DPhil in Cardiovascular Medicine from the University of Oxford. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ), and the American Heart Association (FAHA). In 2023, she was appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to cardiovascular medicine as a clinician, researcher, and leader. She has held NHMRC Practitioner Fellowships since 2018 and previously a National Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellowship from 2014.
Figtree's research focuses on coronary artery disease, particularly in patients without standard modifiable risk factors, molecular mechanisms of acute vascular events, oxidative signaling, and advanced plaque imaging for heart attack prevention. She co-leads the Cardiovascular Theme of Sydney Health Partners, an NHMRC Advanced Health Research Translation Centre, and leads the BioHEART-CT prospective cohort study utilizing coronary CT angiography. Her work has secured substantial NHMRC funding, including Centres of Research Excellence grants and project grants for novel therapies in cardiac fibrosis and diabetic cardiomyopathy. With over 27,000 citations on Google Scholar, key publications include 'Clinical Outcomes in Patients With ST-Segment Elevation MI and No Standard Modifiable Risk Factors' (JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, 2022), 'Noninvasive Plaque Imaging to Accelerate Coronary Artery Disease Drug Development' (Circulation, 2022), and 'Clinical Pathway for Coronary Atherosclerosis in Patients Without Standard Modifiable Risk Factors' (JACC: Asia, 2023). She chairs the University of Sydney's multi-disciplinary Cardiovascular Initiative, contributes to World Heart Federation roadmaps, and supervises postgraduate research students in cardiovascular science.
