About Gemma

Gemma Lewis is Professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology at University College London in the Division of Psychiatry. Her research focuses on the causes, treatment and prevention of depression. She also investigates anxiety, self-harm and conditions that often occur with depression. Lewis leads research on the potential role of academic pressure during secondary school in the development of adolescent depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide. She also leads a research programme which aims to identify modifiable causes of the mental health inequality between LGBTQ+ and cisgender or heterosexual people. She has been based at UCL since 2015. Lewis leads a module on current research in depression and anxiety and teaches statistics and epidemiology. She completed her PhD on family and genetic influences on child and adolescent depression at Cardiff University. She is a Wellcome Trust and Royal Society Sir Henry Dale Fellow.
