Dr Geoff Laney serves as Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery and Critical Care at the Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago, within the Faculty of Medicine, Health Sciences Division. He is a consultant anaesthetist and Head of the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care section. Laney obtained his MB ChB from the University of Otago in 1982 and Diploma in Obstetrics (Dip Obst) in 1984 from the same university. He became a Fellow of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FFARACS) in 1988, Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) in 1992, and holds a Clinical Certificate in Ultrasound (Clin CertUS). With full New Zealand medical registration since 22 November 1983 and vocational scope in Anaesthesia, he practices at Mercy Hospital Dunedin and Manaaki by Mercy.
Laney's expertise encompasses anaesthesia for cardiothoracic surgery, ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery, and obstetrics. He is deeply engaged in teaching medical students and trainees through in-theatre instruction, fifth-year tutorials on analgesia and anaesthesia for obstetric patients, organisation of fifth-year integrative seminars, and coordination of anaesthesia trainee interns. Professionally, he is a member of the New Zealand National Committee of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), having served as Safety and Quality Officer. One key publication is 'Drug allergies in the surgical population' co-authored in the Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia (1994). Through his clinical leadership, educational contributions, and committee roles, Laney significantly supports anaesthesia training and patient care at the University of Otago.
