Elements of this research contributed to a peer-reviewed publication co-authored by Cowan in 2021 titled 'Emotional content of the event but not mood influences false memory', published in Applied Cognitive Psychology (35, 6, 1418-1426). The collaborators included Weiwei Zhang, Marea Colombo, Julien Gross, and Harlene Hayne, all from the Department of Psychology, University of Otago. The study investigated the influence of event emotionality on false memories, finding that emotional content but not mood affected false memory rates.
