Dr. Ghayur Alam is the Senior Professor of Business Laws and Intellectual Property Rights in the Law faculty at the National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal, India. As the senior-most Professor of Law at NLIU, he was the first faculty member to join the institution on 1 August 1998, prior to the commencement of its first academic session, and has played a pivotal role in its academic and administrative development. He holds B.Com (Hons), LL.B, LL.M, Ph.D. in Law from NLIU, and is UGC-NET qualified, securing first position in merit up to the 10+2 level and second position in both LL.B and LL.M examinations. Dr. Alam has held significant leadership positions including Head, Department of Intellectual Property Rights and Business Law; Chairperson, Centre of Business and Commercial Laws; DIPP/DPIIT IPR Chair Professor (additional charge); Dean of Undergraduate Studies; and has officiated multiple times as Director (Vice-Chancellor), Registrar, and Finance Officer.
His research specializations include Intellectual Property Law, Business and Commercial Laws, Patent Law, International Trade Law, Law and Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Patent Law, Disruptive Technologies and Patent Law, and innovative legal pedagogy using case method and logic. He has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly works, including SCOPUS-indexed books, handbooks, and articles. Key publications are “Monsanto’s Bt. Cotton Patent, Indian Courts and Public Policy” published by WIPO–WTO, Geneva (2019–20); “COVID-19 Pandemic: Congenital Fluidity of Proposal for Waiver of IP Rights and the Road Ahead” in WIPO–WTO Colloquium Papers (October 2022); “The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 Interpreted-Constructed by the Supreme Court of India” (2019, co-authored with Aqa Raza); and “Supreme Court of India on Governance” (2017, co-authored with Aqa Raza). Dr. Alam received the Fulbright Fellowship in 2005 for doctoral studies at The George Washington University Law School, WIPO–WTO Fellowship (2019), and participated in the Global Law Deans Forum at Pembroke College, Oxford (2022), among other international programs. He has delivered over 300 invited expert lectures, organized more than 40 workshops, seminars, and conferences, and prepared project reports for Government of India agencies including DST and ICAR.
