Dr Gideon Brough serves as Adjunct Lecturer in French within the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of New England. He earned his PhD in Medieval Diplomatic Relations and Warfare from Cardiff University, United Kingdom. His academic career includes over a decade of teaching at Cardiff University from 2006 to 2018, where he covered topics such as the Hundred Years' War, medieval France, medieval Wales, and study skills. Earlier, he worked for two years at a French university, instructing in languages, linguistics, history, and international relations. In addition to his role at UNE, Brough teaches Welsh, British, and European history at The Open University, United Kingdom.
Brough's scholarly interests center on Welsh and French history, emphasizing warfare, diplomacy, power relations, geopolitics, insurgencies, and concepts of identity. He also explores the French language, courtly intrigue, and translation of medieval French texts, alongside topics like medieval Wales, Brittany, the Papacy, certain crusades, peasant movements, the rise of European nation states, and specific dynasties including the Capetians, Valois, and Medici. Key publications include his book The Rise and Fall of Owain Glyn Dŵr: England, France, and the Welsh Rebellion in the Late Middle Ages (I.B. Tauris, 2017). He co-edited The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier: A Medieval Herald's View of Europe and Its Neighbouring Lands with Sophie Patrick (Bloomsbury Academic, 2024), featuring a collaborative translation project relevant to his UNE affiliation. Furthermore, Brough authored multiple entries in The Encyclopedia of War (Wiley-Blackwell, 2011), including "Anglo-Welsh Wars (1067–1415)," "Decapitation Strategy," and profiles of historical figures such as Owain Glyn Dŵr, Llywelyn the Great, and Rhys ap Gruffudd. His article "Owain’s Revolt? Glyn Dŵr’s role in the outbreak of the rebellion" appeared in 2015.
