Glen Gaulton, a prominent figure in Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, serves as Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Vice Dean, and Director of the Center for Global Health. He holds a B.S. in Biology with honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1974) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the same university (1981). After completing postdoctoral fellowships in immunology at Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School (1980-1983), he joined Penn in 1985 as Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, progressing to Associate Professor with tenure and full Professor in 1998. His administrative career includes roles such as Associate Dean and Director of the Combined Degree and Physician Scholar Programs (1993), Director of Biomedical Graduate Studies (1995), Vice Dean for Research and Research Training (1998), and Executive Vice Dean and Chief Scientific Officer (2006).

Dr. Gaulton's research specializes in viral pathogenesis, early detection of pathogen infections, and outcomes research in global health. The Gaulton laboratory examines molecular mechanisms of retrovirus infections like HIV, their effects on the immune system, syncytium formation leading to cell destruction, and innovative detection methods including MRI imaging and portable devices for HIV diagnosis in blood. He has authored over 100 manuscripts and texts, with notable publications including "Modification of a viral envelope glycoprotein cell-cell fusion assay by utilizing plasmid encoded bacteriophage RNA polymerase" (Journal of Virological Methods, 2005), "The intrathymic pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis" (Clinical and Developmental Immunology, 2005), and "Disparate regions of envelope protein regulate syncytium formation versus spongiform encephalopathy in neurological disease induced by murine leukemia virus TR" (Journal of Virology, 2004). Among his honors are the Dean's Award for Excellence in Basic Science Teaching (1990), Leonard Berwick Teaching Award (1994), Christian R. and Mary F. Linback Award for Distinguished Teaching (1996), Harry Weaver Neuroscience Scholar Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (1985), and Leukemia Society of America Scholar Award (1991). He has mentored over 40 students and fellows, chaired four NIH study sections, serves on executive boards of five organizations, and contributes as editor or reviewer for nine journals.
