Dr. Gloria Dainty is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Women's and Children's Health at the University of Otago's Dunedin School of Medicine. Holding a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Otago awarded in 2020, her doctoral thesis, titled 'Interventions for Childhood Obesity in Southern New Zealand,' investigated approaches to tackling childhood obesity in the region. As a paediatrician, she bridges clinical practice and academia, contributing to child health research and education.
Dainty's peer-reviewed publications highlight her focus on paediatric health challenges. In 2019, she published 'Management of childhood obesity: An audit of clinical practice in secondary care' in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, assessing clinical management of obesity in secondary care settings. Also in 2019, 'Introduction and uptake of electronic growth charts in southern New Zealand' evaluated the adoption of digital growth monitoring tools. Her 2023 co-authored paper, 'Exercise and autism: exploring caregiver insights on exercise participation and sleep disturbances,' appeared in Frontiers in Sleep, examining caregiver views on physical activity and sleep issues in autistic children. An earlier work, 'Spectrum of MODY in the south of New Zealand – including two novel mutations' (2013), explored genetic diabetes variants. In 2018, she received the New Researcher Start Up Award from the University of Otago Health Research Excellence Awards, recognizing her early-career promise. Dainty convenes CHHE701 Community Child Health, leveraging expertise from Otago's clinical medical schools. Her contributions advance understanding and interventions in childhood obesity, growth assessment, neurodevelopmental conditions, and community paediatrics.
