An alumnus of the University of Otago, Heller holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the institution. Prior to joining the university staff in 2016 as the new Dunedin Schools' Liaison Officer, he was Deputy Principal at South Otago High School, where he led in school administration, student welfare, and extracurricular activities, including as rugby coordinator. In this capacity, he supported student athletes, such as those selected for national training squads. He has been involved in various outreach events, including those with Pacific Islands communities and disability support newsletters, emphasizing successful student transitions. Additionally, Heller received recognition for his long-term volunteer contributions to Southland rugby in 2021, humbly attributing the accolade to team efforts.
