Guillaume Durand, Ph.D., is a distinguished professor of archaeology and art history at the Institute for American Universities (IAU) in Aix-en-Provence, France, where he has been a faculty member since 2002. Currently serving as Assistant Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences since 2014, he plays a pivotal role in academic leadership and curriculum development within the institution. Durand also directs the January Term Traveling Seminar on Mediterranean Civilizations, offering students hands-on exploration of ancient sites and cultural landmarks across the region.
Durand earned his Master's degree in Art History and Archaeology, specializing in Byzantine Studies, and his Doctorat (Ph.D.) in Romanian History from the University of Provence (Aix-Marseille Université). He further advanced his research through a three-year post-doctoral program completed in 2014, funded by the European Union and conducted under the auspices of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His academic interests center on archaeology, art history, Byzantine studies, and Romanian history. Professor Durand maintains active involvement and oversight in local, regional, and national archaeological excavations in France. He regularly participates in international conferences throughout France and Europe, contributing to scholarly discourse in his fields. His publications include two books and several articles in French academic journals such as Cahiers des Études Romanes and Turcica, as well as Romanian publications including Historical Yearbook and Annals of the Spiru Haret University. Fluent in French, English, Romanian, and Greek, Dr. Durand enriches IAU's educational environment through his multilingual expertise and commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship.
