Dr. Gyorgy Deri serves as Senior Lecturer in Cello and Head of Chamber Music at the Queensland Conservatorium, part of Griffith University's Arts, Education and Law Group. Appointed in 2020, he contributes to teaching, performance, and research within the Creative Arts Research Institute. Born in Hungary in 1965 into an extended family of musicians, Deri began playing the cello at the age of six. His early education included studies at the Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music from 1974 to 1982. He completed his doctoral studies, earning a DLA summa cum laude in 2012 at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. Prior to joining Griffith University, Deri held teaching positions at the Liszt Ferenc Academy, starting as an assistant lecturer from 1987 to 1989 and later advancing to Head of the Cello, Viola da Gamba, and Double Bass Department since 2011. His extensive career as a cellist encompasses solo recitals, chamber music performances, and orchestral collaborations.
Deri's research interests focus on talent development in classical music and the intersections between everyday life and the arts. He has delivered public lectures at Griffith University, including discussions on the origins of Joseph Haydn's Six String Sonatas and explorations of historical performance practices through archival research. As Head of Chamber Music, he mentors students in ensemble playing and showcases their talents in concerts featuring classic repertoire. Since summer 2024, Deri has been a member of the Southern Cross Soloists, expanding his performance portfolio with a series of engagements. His office is at S01 1.31 on the South Bank Campus, where he supervises cello students and chamber music activities. Deri's dual expertise in performance and pedagogy enriches the Queensland Conservatorium's strings program and fosters connections between academic study and professional music-making.
