Associate Professor Hamish Jamieson is a geriatrician and medical specialist in Older Persons Health in the Department of Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch. He earned his BMedSci and MBChB from the University of Otago, a PhD from the University of Sydney, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). Currently, he serves as Associate Professor in Medicine and practices at Burwood Hospital, Te Whatu Ora. Previously recognized as a Senior Lecturer, Jamieson leads the Big Data and Better Ageing Research Group, a collaboration between the University of Otago, Canterbury District Health Board, and the University of Canterbury. This group employs big data analytics to model health conditions, identify unmet needs, and enhance patient outcomes for older adults.
His research specializations encompass ageing, linking large datasets, human longevity, translational research to improve clinical management of older people, interRAI assessments, and healthy ageing. Jamieson has spearheaded projects funded by the Ageing Well National Science Challenge, Health Research Council, and Royal Australasian College of Physicians, contributing to advancements in geriatric care. Key publications include 'Epidemiology of vision and hearing impairment in older community dwelling adults in New Zealand' (Australasian Journal on Ageing, 2025), 'How does the level of functional impairment vary in individuals with non-communicable disease and comorbidity? Cross-sectional analysis of linked census and administrative data in Aotearoa New Zealand' (BMJ Open, 2024), and 'Changes in indicators of well-being on moving from home to long-term care for Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand: A retrospective cohort study' (Australasian Journal on Ageing, 2024). Additional works address frailty indices, loneliness, social isolation, polypharmacy, and vision impairment in ageing populations, fostering data-driven improvements in older persons' health.
