About Hannes

Hannes Baumann is an Associate Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of Connecticut’s Avery Point campus, where he leads the Evolutionary Fish Ecology Lab. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg, Germany. Baumann investigates how coastal marine fish populations adapt to natural environmental variability and anthropogenic changes, including ocean acidification, warming, fisheries exploitation, and alterations to marine food webs. His research employs experimental, field, and modeling approaches, incorporating tools such as otolith microstructure analysis, fish physiology, population dynamics, and evolutionary genetics. He has particular interest in species such as Atlantic silversides and sand lances. Baumann joined the University of Connecticut in 2014 and teaches courses including Principles of Biology and Ecology of Fishes.

Baumann maintains an active research program supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and Connecticut Sea Grant. His work appears in peer-reviewed journals, and he has contributed a chapter on fish ecology to the 2022 textbook Marine Biology: A Functional Approach to the Oceans and Their Organisms.
