John N. Ivan is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Connecticut, where he has been on the faculty since 1994, progressing from lecturer to assistant professor (1994-2000), associate professor (2000-2007), and full professor (2007-present). He served as Associate Head of the Department from 2006-2008 and 2009-2015, and held visiting appointments including Research Civil Engineer at the Federal Highway Administration's Turner Fairbank Highway Research Center in spring 2016, visiting researcher at Lund University in Sweden in spring 2009, Fulbright Senior Scholar at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, and Research Engineer at the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University during 2002-2003. Ivan holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University (1985), an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1987), and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a focus on Transportation from Northwestern University (1994).
Ivan's research centers on highway crash prediction, pedestrian and bicycle safety, statistical modeling of transportation systems, and the application of statistical forecasting techniques to assess the sustainability of transportation systems, particularly highway safety and operations. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and 60 conference papers, including highly influential works such as 'Poisson, Poisson-gamma and zero-inflated regression models of motor vehicle crashes: balancing statistical fit and theory' (Accident Analysis & Prevention, 2005), 'Factors influencing injury severity of motor vehicle–crossing pedestrian crashes in rural Connecticut' (Accident Analysis & Prevention, 2003), and 'Selecting exposure measures in crash rate prediction for two-lane highway segments' (Accident Analysis & Prevention, 2004). As principal or co-investigator on funded projects totaling nearly $10 million, he has shaped safety analysis practices. Awards include election to the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (2011), Fulbright Senior Scholar (2002-2003), Transportation Research Board Best Paper Awards (2007, 2011), and advisor to Best Paper by Young Researcher winners (2015, 2024). Ivan serves as associate editor of Accident Analysis & Prevention, has chaired Transportation Research Board subcommittees, acts as a Program Evaluator for ABET, Inc., since 2012, and has supervised 11 Ph.D. and 23 M.S. students to completion.
