Associate Professor Harj Singh is based in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance at Curtin University in the Faculty of Business and Law. He holds a BBus, MBA, MAcc, PhD, and is a Chartered Accountant (CA). Prior to academia, he accumulated nearly 10 years of public practice experience as an Audit Manager at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and other firms in Australia and Singapore from 1992 to 2001. His academic appointments include Lecturer at Edith Cowan University (2001-2006) and The University of Western Australia (2006-2007), followed by positions at Curtin University since 2008: Lecturer (2008-2014), Senior Lecturer (2015-2023), and Associate Professor from 2024. He teaches masters-level units in auditing and assurance and has designed the new unit ACCT6008 Sustainability Accounting and Reporting, set to commence in 2027, covering climate crises, ESG priorities, risk management, Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards AASB S1 and S2, and sustainability assurance.
Singh's research specializations encompass sustainability accounting and reporting, carbon accounting and emissions reporting, natural capital accounting and biodiversity measurement, ESG risk management, governance, regulatory implementation of sustainability standards, auditing, assurance, and verification. Notable publications include 'Audit committee characteristics and audit report lag' (Sultana, Singh, and Van der Zahn, International Journal of Auditing, 2015); 'Experience of audit committee members and audit quality' (Sultana, Singh, and Rahman, European Accounting Review, 2019); 'Busy auditors, financial reporting timeliness and quality' (Singh et al., British Accounting Review, 2022); 'Managerial ability and accounting conservatism' (Haider, Singh, and Sultana, Journal of Contemporary Accounting and Economics, 2021); and recent contributions such as comments on Proposed ISSA 5000 for sustainability assurance (Hay et al., Accounting and Finance, 2024). In 2022, he was awarded the Faculty of Business and Law HDR Supervisor of the Year. Singh delivers executive education programs in climate finance, sustainability accounting, reporting, and carbon accounting; serves as an international trainer for DFAT-funded Australia Awards initiatives; and has presented public forums including 'Mandatory Climate Reporting, What You Need to Know' in September 2024. He contributes to the AFAANZ Auditing and Assurance Standards Committee, co-authoring responses to international standards on sustainability assurance, GHG emissions disclosure, and audit evidence.
