Hayley Bertrand is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, appointed to the faculty in 2022. She received her B.A. from St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, M.A. in Mathematics from Indiana University Bloomington, and Ph.D. in Mathematics from Indiana University Bloomington. Bertrand's research focuses on algebraic combinatorics, particularly in the context of algebraic topology. Her investigations include computations of the Euler characteristic of the Coxeter cohomology of symmetric groups. Key publications include "Calculations of the Euler characteristic of the Coxeter cohomology of symmetric groups," published in the Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics in 2024, and "On uniformly most reliable two-terminal graphs" in 2018. She has presented her research at significant conferences, such as the American Mathematical Society 2024 Spring Central Sectional Meeting with a talk on computations of the Euler characteristic of the Coxeter cohomology of symmetric groups, and the Joint Mathematics Meetings in 2023.
In the classroom, Bertrand teaches undergraduate courses including Graph Theory (MATH 450), Mathematics for the Elementary Teacher I (MATH 148) and II (MATH 149), Calculus and Analytic Geometry III (MATH 255), Quantitative Reasoning (MATH 139), and Independent Study (MATH 498). She serves as an advisor for the Student Math Association at UW-Whitewater. Bertrand engages with the broader mathematics community through participation in the 2022 Wisconsin Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators Conference, Mathematical Association of America Wisconsin Section events, and recognition as a new faculty member contributing to departmental activities.
