Heath Rose is Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford, where he specializes in language teaching research. He earned his PhD in Education from the University of Sydney and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in 1997. His professional journey commenced with teaching roles in schools in Australia and Japan following his PGCE. He then transitioned to higher education, serving as Lecturer at Kanda University of International Studies in Chiba, Japan from 2004 to 2007, Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Business at Rikkyo University in Tokyo from 2007 to 2012, and Assistant Professor in the School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences at Trinity College Dublin from 2012 to 2015, prior to his appointment at Oxford.
Professor Rose's academic interests encompass self-regulation and language learner strategies, Global Englishes, teaching English as an international language, and English Medium Instruction (EMI). He coordinates the EMI Oxford Research Group and leads the broader EMI Oxford Research Network. In addition to his professorial duties, he holds the position of Director for People in the Department of Education and serves as Vice-Principal at Linacre College, Oxford. He is also the series co-editor for Cambridge Elements in Language Teaching. His influential publications include co-authored books such as Teaching English as an International Language (Cambridge University Press, 2024, with Selvi and Galloway), Global TESOL for the 21st Century: Teaching English in a Changing World (Channel View Publications, 2020, with Syrbe, Montakantiwong, and Funada), Global Englishes for Language Teaching (Cambridge University Press, 2019, with Galloway), The Routledge Handbook of Research Methods in Applied Linguistics (Routledge, 2019, with McKinley), and Introducing Global Englishes (Routledge, 2015, with Galloway).
