About Helen

Helen W. Boucher, MD, FACP, FIDSA, (Hon) FRCPI, serves as Dean and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and as Chief Academic Officer of Tufts Medicine. She joined the Tufts University School of Medicine faculty in 2002 as a member of the Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Tufts Medical Center. Boucher previously held the positions of Chief of the Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Tufts Medical Center and Director of the Stuart B. Levy Center for Integrated Management of Antimicrobial Resistance. She also directed the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program for 14 years. Boucher earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1986 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1993. She completed her residency at Deaconess Hospital in Boston, serving as chief resident, followed by a clinical and research fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Boucher’s clinical interests include infections in immunocompromised patients and Staphylococcus aureus infections, while her research focuses on S. aureus and the development of new anti-infective agents. She chairs the National Institutes of Health Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group Innovations Working Group and serves on its Executive and Steering Committees. Boucher is the author or coauthor of numerous peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and chapters published in journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Clinical Infectious Diseases, and Annals of Internal Medicine. She is a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, an associate editor of Infectious Diseases, a member of the editorial board for Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, and treasurer of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Boucher was named Dean of Tufts University School of Medicine in 2022, having served as interim dean since 2021, and is the first woman to hold the position.
