Professor Helen Hodgson is a Professor at Curtin Law School, Curtin University, and serves as Director of Graduate Studies. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Business (B.Bus) and Postgraduate Diploma in Business from Curtin University, a Master of Taxation (M.Tax) and PhD from the University of New South Wales, where her doctoral research compared family tax-transfer systems in Australia and the United Kingdom. A Fellow of the Australian Society of CPAs (FCPA) and Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA), she has taught taxation law in business and law schools since 1989. She joined Curtin Law School in 2014 after holding research and teaching leadership positions at Curtin University and UNSW. Between 1997 and 2001, Hodgson was a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council representing the Australian Democrats.
Hodgson's research focuses on the intersections between taxation and social policy, particularly superannuation, retirement incomes, housing, gender equity, and inequality. She has contributed to policy reviews on superannuation and the tax-transfer system. Key publications include 'Balance of Power Politics and Tax Reform' in the Journal of the Australasian Tax Teachers Association (2014), the chapter 'Gender equality and a rights-based approach to tax reform' in Tax, Social Policy and Gender (2017), 'The income tax treatment of housing assets: an assessment of reform options' (2018, co-authored with Alan Duncan, John Minas, Rachel Ong, and Richard Seymour), and co-authorship of Tax Questions and Answers (2013). Her teaching areas encompass superannuation, capital gains tax, and the taxation of trusts and companies. Hodgson influences public policy as a member of the ACOSS Tax and Superannuation Advisory Group, Director and Social Policy Committee member of the National Foundation for Australian Women, media expert, and speaker at events including Curtin Corner presentations and Community Tax Summits.
