Dr Helen L. Petsky is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Griffith University, where she has served since February 2017. A registered nurse with extensive clinical experience, she holds a Bachelor of Nursing (BN) and a PhD completed in 2013 at the Centre for Children's Health Research in Brisbane under the supervision of Professor Anne Chang. Her professional career includes roles as Clinical Nurse Consultant in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at The Royal Children's Hospital, Brisbane from 2004 to 2011, and Project Manager at Queensland University of Technology's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation from 2012 to 2017. Petsky lectures in nursing and midwifery while advancing research translation from paediatric studies.
Petsky's academic interests centre on paediatrics, respiratory medicine, and pulmonology, particularly asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic cough, protracted bacterial bronchitis, and family-centred care in children. As a mid-career researcher, she has published 82 peer-reviewed articles, accumulating over 4,700 citations on Google Scholar and 3,750 on ResearchGate. Prominent works include the highly cited meta-analysis 'A systematic review and meta-analysis: Tailoring asthma treatment on eosinophilic markers (exhaled nitric oxide or sputum eosinophils)' in Thorax (2012, 460 citations), 'A multicenter study on chronic cough in children: burden and etiologies based on a standardized management pathway' in Chest (2012, 306 citations), and Cochrane systematic reviews such as 'Tailored interventions based on exhaled nitric oxide versus clinical symptoms for asthma in children and adults' (2009, 298 citations), 'Tailored interventions based on sputum eosinophils versus clinical symptoms for asthma in children and adults' (2017, 227 citations), and 'Exhaled nitric oxide levels to guide treatment for children with asthma' (2016, 225 citations). Her contributions extend to clinical guidelines from the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand on chronic suppurative lung disease and bronchiectasis. Petsky is a regular reviewer for journals including Paediatric Pulmonology and the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and held a fellowship with the Centre of Research Excellence in Respiratory Health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children (2012-2018), evaluating peer-led anti-smoking education programs.
