About Helen

Associate Professor Helen Wilcox, MB BS (University of Western Australia), DCH, FRACGP, is Dean and Head of School of the UWA Medical School and MD Program Director at the University of Western Australia. She holds the position of Associate Professor in General Practice within the UWA Medical School. A qualified general practitioner with a special interest in doctors' health, Wilcox previously served as Senior Lecturer at the School of Medicine, University of Notre Dame Australia (Fremantle). She also leads the Medical Education Unit as Program Director. In August 2025, she was appointed to her current deanship, following an interim role since January 2025, becoming the first general practitioner to lead the UWA Medical School. Her leadership extends to senior roles in medical schools and specialty colleges nationally and internationally.

Wilcox's research specializations encompass doctors' health, medical education, near-peer teaching, incivility during clinical placements, artificial intelligence applications in general practice, simulation training for multidisciplinary health students, and patient and carer priorities for research and clinical care, including for children with Down syndrome. She has authored or co-authored 16 research outputs, including peer-reviewed articles published in high-impact journals. Key publications include 'Patient and carer priorities for research and clinical care of children with Down syndrome' (Archives of Disease in Childhood, 2025, with E. Taylor et al.), 'Students as pawns: A qualitative study of the impacts of encountering incivility on medical students during clinical placements' (Medical Teacher, 2025, with K. Jutsum and A. Rixon), and 'The Great Scribe-Off: A Comparative Analysis of AI Scribes Versus Human Documentation in Simulated General Practice Consultations' (Studies in Health Technology and Informatics, 2025, with D. Foo et al.). Other notable works cover near-peer teaching effectiveness and simulation-based training. She is principal investigator on active projects such as GEMPASS 3WA Medical Schools Community Engagement in Selection (2024-2026). Wilcox has received the Doctors' Health Alliance Research Funding (2024) and multiple UWA Learning & Teaching Excellence Grants (2023). She contributes as a reviewer for the Medical Journal of Australia and serves on the programme committee for the Australasian Doctors' Health Conference (2025). Her scholarship advances medical education innovation, clinician well-being, and patient-centered care priorities.
