Henrikki Tenkanen is Assistant Professor of Geoinformation Technology at Aalto University in the Department of Built Environment, School of Engineering, where he leads the GIST Lab. He is a geographer by training with a PhD in Geoinformatics. Tenkanen also holds the position of adjunct professor, or Title of Docent, at the University of Helsinki since 2022 and serves as Honorary Research Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at University College London since 2020. He is additionally an Academy Research Fellow.
Tenkanen’s research focuses on developing open and reproducible geospatial methods to study spatial accessibility, human mobility, human-environment interactions, and spatial data science. He contributes to the creation and maintenance of open-source tools and teaching materials for geospatial analysis using Python. His work appears in peer-reviewed publications on topics including mobility corridors, urban heat stress, navigation instruction evaluation, commuting inequalities, land-use impacts on carbon footprints, and cyclist route preferences.
