About Henry T.
Henry T. Yang is a Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Chancellor Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He earned his BS in Civil Engineering from National Taiwan University, MS in Structural Engineering from West Virginia University, and PhD in Structural Engineering from Cornell University. Prior to joining UCSB in 1994 as its fifth Chancellor and professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering, Yang was the Neil A. Armstrong Distinguished Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University. There, he served as Dean of Engineering for ten years and Director of the Computer Integrated Design, Manufacturing, and Automation Center. He has also been a member of the President's Committee for the National Medal of Science and scientific advisory boards for the Department of Defense, US Air Force, US Navy, NASA, and the National Academy of Engineering. Yang chaired the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and the Association of American Universities.
Yang's research specializations encompass solid mechanics, materials and structures, dynamic systems and control, and micro- and nanoscale engineering, with specific focus on aircraft structures, structural dynamics and control, transonic aeroelasticity, finite elements, composite materials, seismic- and wind-structural control, and intelligent manufacturing systems. He has authored or co-authored more than 190 articles in scientific journals and the textbook Finite Element Structural Analysis, published by Prentice-Hall and translated into Japanese and Chinese editions. Yang has advised 55 Ph.D. and 23 M.S. recipients, continues to teach an undergraduate course each year, and is guiding one Ph.D. student. His academic impact is reflected in major awards, including election to the National Academy of Engineering, fellowships from AIAA, ASEE, and ASME, the Benjamin Garver Lamme Medal from ASEE in 1998, the AIAA Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Award in 2008, and the NAE Arthur M. Bueche Award in 2016. He received an honorary distinguished teaching award from UCSB's Academic Senate.
