Dr. Hilde van der Vyver is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Curtin University, within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She holds the position of Director, Diversity Inclusion and Belonging for the school. Based at Curtin Perth in Building 204, Room 401, she is contactable at +61 8 9266 5298. Her teaching responsibilities include coordinating and delivering units such as MCEN2002 Fundamentals of Mechanical Design and MCEN2003 Machine Dynamics. In these courses, she covers essential topics in mechanical engineering, including virtual work principles, machine dynamics, inertia experiments, and convection heat transfer laboratories. These units equip students with foundational skills in mechanical design, analysis, and thermodynamics applicable to engineering practice.
Dr. van der Vyver's research focuses on heat transfer and fluid dynamics, with contributions to convective heat transfer in annuli and innovative heat exchanger designs. Her key publications include 'Convection Heat Transfer in Concentric Annuli' (2004, co-authored with J. Dirker and J. P. Meyer, published in Experimental Heat Transfer), which examines convection regimes in annular flows, and 'Heat Transfer Characteristics of a Quadratic Koch Island Fractal Heat Exchanger' (2005, co-authored with J. P. Meyer, published in Heat Transfer Engineering, 26(9):22-29), investigating fractal surface enhancements for improved thermal performance. Earlier work includes validation of CFD models for three-dimensional tube-in-tube heat exchangers, conducted during her time at Rand Afrikaans University in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. These studies have garnered citations and advanced understanding of heat transfer augmentation techniques in mechanical systems. She continues to contribute to the academic community through teaching excellence and leadership in diversity initiatives.
