Professor Holger Regenbrecht serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Information Science at the University of Otago. He earned his Diplom-Informatiker (Dipl. Inf.) and Doctor of Engineering (Dr. Ing., magna cum laude) from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany, with his PhD thesis titled "Factors of Presence within Virtual Architecture." Prior to Otago, where he has been since 2004, Regenbrecht was a Research Scientist at Bauhaus University Weimar from 1994 to 1999, managing the Virtual Reality Laboratory, and then Project Manager and Scientific Leader at the DaimlerChrysler Research Center in Ulm, Germany from 2000 to 2004, initiating the Mixed Reality Laboratory. He has worked in the fields of Virtual and Augmented Reality for over 25 years.
Regenbrecht's research interests include Human-Computer Interaction, applied computer science and information technology, collaborative Augmented Reality, 3D teleconferencing, psychological aspects of Mixed Reality, three-dimensional user interfaces, and computer-aided therapy and rehabilitation. He leads the Human-Computer Interaction Group at the University of Otago. Key publications encompass "The experience of presence: Factor analytic insights" (Schubert, Friedmann, & Regenbrecht, Presence, 2001), cited more than 3,000 times; "Manipulating the experience of reality for rehabilitation applications" (Regenbrecht et al., Proceedings of the IEEE, 2014); "Out of reach? A novel AR interface approach for motor rehabilitation" (Regenbrecht et al., ISMAR, 2011); "Towards pervasive augmented reality: Context-awareness in augmented reality" (Grubert et al., 2016); and "Augmented reality projects in the automotive and aerospace industries" (Regenbrecht et al., 2005). He has earned multiple Top Supervisor of the Year awards, including best in division in 2013 and 2014, and finalist nominations in other years; the German Körber Research Prize (4th place, 1998); and the Science Prize at Bauhaus University Weimar (2003). His work is funded by SfTI and MBIE grants, and he contributes as a reviewer for conferences and journals, holding memberships in IEEE and ACM.
