About Holly

Dr. Holly Cline is Chair of the Department of Design, Special Assistant to the Provost, NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative, and Professor at Radford University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. Having joined the institution in 1997, she has held various leadership positions within the department, previously known as Interior Design and Fashion. She earned her PhD in Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management from Virginia Tech, Master of Arts in Interior Design from the University of Kentucky, and Bachelor of Fine Arts from Centre College. Cline is certified by the National Council for Interior Designers (NCIDQ) and as a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP), with over 20 years of college-level teaching experience.

Cline’s courses include Health Care Design, Restaurant Design, Residential Design, Presentation Graphics, Introduction to Design, Professional Practice and Ethics, Design Fundamentals Sophomore Studio, Drafting, and Portfolio Development. She created and oversees Radford’s online MFA in Design Thinking—the first such graduate program in the United States—which has earned recognition from Design Intelligence in areas such as design technologies, theory and practice, engineering fundamentals, healthy built environments, research, sustainable and adaptive design, and practice management. Her academic contributions include co-authoring “Cancer Treatment Facilities: Using Design Thinking to Improve the Patient and Family Experience” published in the Journal of Interior Design in 2018. Awards she has received encompass Radford University’s Outstanding Advisor Award (2006), the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) Presidential Citation Merit Award (2008) for her work with the Interior Design Continuing Education Council, and the IDEC Service Award (2014). Additionally, she serves as a CIDA accreditation site visitor, contributed to the College Art Association’s (CAA) taskforce and inaugural Committee on Design, and sits on the IDEC Foundation Board. Cline has been a keynote speaker at numerous conferences, luncheons, and workshops, emphasizing creative solutions in Design Thinking and socially responsible design.
