Huda Hassan served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development from 2022 to 2025. She earned her PhD in Women and Gender Studies from the University of Toronto, where she held the position of 2020 New College Doctoral Fellow. Hassan's research centers on Black and African cultural expressions within the diaspora, integrating approaches from gender studies, literary and cultural studies, and media studies. Her academic interests include Black cultural and feminist studies, African diasporas, countercultures, and the politics of difference. Her ongoing projects feature a qualitative investigation into the history of Somalis in 19th- and 20th-century New York City and analyses of Black diasporic influences on the 20th-century Harlem Renaissance.
Before joining NYU, Hassan taught courses addressing music and the African diaspora, Black feminist literature, and feminist theories and methods. Renowned as a writer, scholar, and cultural critic, her contributions have appeared in Pitchfork, BuzzFeed, New York Magazine, The Globe and Mail, Cosmopolitan, Gawker, Pound magazine, Complex, and CBC Arts. She acted as managing editor for Topia: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies and has worked as a producer on projects such as CBC's For The Culture. Throughout her career, Hassan has managed musical artists, contributed to documentary television and films, and curated exhibits. She was awarded the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center fellowship in recognition of her writing and research. Additionally, she has participated as a jury member for the National Magazine Awards, Polaris Music Prize, and SOCAN Songwriting Awards. Hassan's debut essay collection, Children of the Snow, which explores themes of grief, exile, and community in the diaspora through urban lenses, is scheduled for publication in 2027 by McClelland & Stewart, an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada.
