Dr. Hyungsik Lim is a professor of optometry at the Indiana University School of Optometry. He received a Bachelor of Engineering in Material Science and Engineering from Seoul National University in 1998, a Master of Science in Physics from Ohio State University in 2000, and a Ph.D. in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University in 2005. Following postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Johannes F. de Boer at Harvard Medical School and in the laboratory of Dr. Watt W. Webb at Cornell University, Lim joined the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Hunter College of the City University of New York in 2009 as an assistant professor, rising to the rank of full professor in 2021. In 2024, he joined the Indiana University School of Optometry as professor of optometry and established the Lim Lab as principal investigator.
Lim's academic interests encompass gene expression, neurodegenerative disorders, glaucoma, and biophysics, with a focus on vision science and advanced imaging techniques such as multiphoton microscopy for retinal studies. His research has contributed to understanding glaucoma pathogenesis, including axonal microtubule degradation in mouse models. Key publications include "Differential protection by nicotinamide in a mouse model of glaucoma," published in PLOS ONE in 2024 with Vinessia Boodram, and the preprint "Amplified MS2 labeling reveals heterogeneous dynamics of RNA granules in the live murine brain." Previously at Hunter College, he received a grant from the BrightFocus Foundation for "Investigating Early Pathogenic Events of Glaucoma by Second-Harmonic Generation." Lim presented "Multiphoton Microscopic Imaging of Retina" at the Oxyopia Vision Science Seminar in February 2023. As a faculty member in the Program in Neuroscience, he accepts new graduate students, reviews applications, and leads a lab team comprising research technician Grace Cooper, postdoctoral researcher Daniel Larbi (OD/PhD), and PhD student Yutong Liu in Neuroscience.
