Professor Ian Hamilton is Vice Dean of Research at The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment and Professor of Energy, Environment and Health at the UCL Energy Institute, University College London. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Waterloo in 2005, an MSc in Built Environment – Environmental Design from UCL, and a PhD in Energy and Built Environment from UCL completed in 2015. Professor Hamilton previously served as Executive Director of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change. His research focuses on the intersection of climate change, energy systems, and human health, with particular emphasis on evaluating climate mitigation actions in the built environment and their impacts on indoor and outdoor environmental conditions as well as associated health and wellbeing outcomes. He has held appointments including Reader at the UCL Energy Institute prior to his current professorial role. Professor Hamilton contributes to major collaborative efforts such as the Lancet Countdown reports and maintains an extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals on topics including energy demand, buildings, environment, and public health, with his work cited over 25,000 times according to academic databases. He also co-leads PhD research skills modules at UCL and engages in professional activities advancing planetary health and sustainable built environments.
