Ian Kalmakoff has practised Tai Chi for about 30 years. Initially drawn to its martial arts aspects, he now values its internal benefits, such as calming the mind and providing perspective on life. A qualified Tai Chi instructor, he attends classes as a student at the Dunedin Tai Chi club, which typically has 12 to 15 students and two teachers in the morning sessions held in front of Lan Yuan Chinese Garden. In January 2023, he took part in the club's Tai Chi demonstration at the Chinese New Year celebrations at Lan Yuan, Dunedin Chinese Garden—their fourth such event, performed inside the garden. Kalmakoff notes that Tai Chi appears gentle, slow, and easy but is difficult, requiring strength, balance, flexibility, and concentration. It focuses on self-improvement and self-awareness, accessible to anyone regardless of age or ability. Following demonstrations, newcomers often join classes for a $2 koha, with no obligation to continue.
