Dr. Ingrid O'Brien is a Senior Lecturer in Management and Marketing at Murdoch University's Business School. She holds key leadership positions including Associate Dean Global Engagement and Academic Chair of the Postgraduate Master of Business Administration (MBA). Earlier roles at the university include Director of Postgraduate Coursework in the Murdoch Business School and Lecturer in Marketing within the College of Business. O'Brien commenced her academic appointment at Murdoch University in February 2016. Prior to this, she established and has operated O'Brien Consulting since January 2009, providing consultancy services. She completed her PhD at the University of Western Australia in 2015.
O'Brien's research focuses on customer engagement, value co-creation, social responsibility, and volunteering. Her publications have received over 300 citations on Google Scholar and include a co-authored paper in the Journal of Service Theory and Practice (2020) with Robyn Ouschan, Wade Jarvis, and Geoffrey N. Soutar. She has contributed to collaborative reports such as 'University Students' Volunteering During the COVID-19 Pandemic' (2023, with Fazlul K. Rabbanee, Kirsten Holmes, Megan Paull, and others) and 'Managing Volunteers in Dementia Care,' a Volunteering WA funded pilot project (2025, with Megan Paull and Sally Paulin). O'Brien supervises PhD students on topics including farmer entrepreneurial intention and vicarious leadership experiences. She led the marketing major refresh initiative drawing on Singapore insights with Dr. Cheryl Leo and supported AACSB accreditation efforts through global collaborations. In 2025, she served as a judge for the Franchise Industry Awards Western Australia. Her teaching emphasizes marketing's potential as a force for good, preparing business students for contemporary professional environments.
