Irena Hutton is the Gene Taylor/Bank of America Professor of Finance in the Department of Finance at Florida State University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Business. She serves as Director of the Truist Free Enterprise Center and Doctoral Coordinator for the Ph.D. Program in Finance. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Finance from Baruch College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 2006, an MBA from the University of Southern Maine in 2001, a B.S. in Business Administration with a Finance concentration in 2000, and a B.A. in Economics in 1999 from the University of Southern Maine. Prior to her tenure at FSU, she served as Substitute and Adjunct Instructor of Finance at Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business from 2003 to 2006. She joined Florida State University as Assistant Professor of Finance in August 2006, advancing to Associate Professor in August 2014.
Hutton teaches courses in financial management and valuation at undergraduate and graduate levels. Her research interests encompass corporate finance, behavioral finance, corporate governance, law and finance, corporate litigation, equity offerings, and capital structure. She has published extensively in top-tier journals such as the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Management Science, Journal of Corporate Finance, Financial Management, and European Financial Management. A New Verdict on the Reputation Loss Induced by Corporate Litigation” with Aimee Smith and Bruce Haslem (Financial Management, 2017); “Arbitrage with Arbitrageurs: Short interest as a signal to issue equity” with Don Autore, Dominique Gehy, and Danling Jiang (Journal of Corporate Finance, 2018); “Equity Issuance and Stock Returns: Evidence from Repeat Equity Issues” with Armen Hovakimian (Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, 2010); and “Merger-motivated IPOs” with Armen Hovakimian (Financial Management, 2010). Her honors include the Oscar Lasdon Best Dissertation in Finance Award (2006), FSU COFRS Grant (2013), multiple FSU College of Business Summer Research Grants (2008–2013), FSU First Year Assistant Professor Summer Research Grants (2007–2008), and membership in Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Societies. She has served on dissertation committees, conference program committees including for the Financial Management Association and SUNTRUST Conference, and as faculty mentor for the MSF Student Organization.
