Isy Oderberg is a distinguished journalist, author, and communications strategist with over two decades of experience in media and advocacy. Growing up in Hong Kong, she attended university in Melbourne before embarking on an international journalism career. She worked in London for Dow Jones and Reuters, then joined Melbourne’s Herald Sun as deputy business editor and Australia’s inaugural social media editor. Promoted to national social media editor for News Corp Australia, she managed strategy, development, training, policy creation, implementation, and branding across multiple newsrooms. As a freelance contributor, her work has appeared in The Guardian, ArtsHub—where she reviews comedy, opera, theatre, and restaurants within the arts and culture sector—Beat Magazine, Urban Walkabout, The Age/SMH, ABC, and Meanjin.
Currently, Oderberg serves as Communications Strategist for the Indigenous Studies Unit within the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health at the University of Melbourne. Drawing on her deep expertise in media, advocacy, crisis management, and not-for-profit strategy, she employs creative problem-solving and high-impact storytelling to foster systemic change. She has delivered lectures in journalism at both the University of Melbourne and Monash University. Her debut book, Hard to Bear: Investigating the science and silence of miscarriage, blends investigative journalism with personal insights into pregnancy loss. Oderberg founded the Early Pregnancy Loss Coalition, amplifying awareness and support for affected families. In recognition of her contributions, she received the 2024 RANZCOG Outstanding Contribution to Women’s Health Award. She also holds positions on the board of the Melbourne Press Club and contributes to initiatives like the Indigenous Data Network.
