Professor Ivan Goldberg AM, MBBS (Syd), FRANZCO, FRACS, serves as Clinical Professor in the Discipline of Ophthalmology within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. A graduate of the University of Sydney in 1971, he worked at Sydney Hospital from 1971 to 1973 before undertaking ophthalmology training. He completed a Glaucoma Fellowship and served as faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, United States. He worked closely with Professor FC Hollows as Director of Glaucoma Services at Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital, engaging in patient care, teaching, clinical research, and educational projects. In 1998, he transferred to Sydney Eye Hospital, where he heads the Glaucoma Unit and serves as Visiting Ophthalmologist. He is also Director of Eye Associates in Sydney.
Professor Goldberg’s research specializations and academic interests center on glaucoma. He is author or co-author of over 160 peer-reviewed publications, 20 editorials, 20 book chapters, and 2 books. Key publications include “Current management of glaucoma” (2019), “Brimonidine and brinzolamide for treating glaucoma and ocular hypertension; a safety evaluation” (2017), “Whole exome sequencing implicates eye development, the unfolded protein response and plasma membrane homeostasis in primary open-angle glaucoma” (2017), and “Applications of the water drinking test in glaucoma management” (2017). He holds reviewer and editorial board positions with more than a dozen international glaucoma and ophthalmology journals. Major awards include appointment as Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to ophthalmology and glaucoma awareness, and the 2013 American Glaucoma Society International Scholar award for lifetime contributions to glaucoma. He co-founded Glaucoma Australia in 1988 and served as its President. Career highlights include past presidencies of the World Glaucoma Association, Asia Pacific Glaucoma Society, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (2001), Australian and New Zealand Glaucoma Society, and as founding President of the South East Asia Glaucoma Interest Group. He chaired the working party for the Asia Pacific Glaucoma Guidelines (2003 and 2008 editions) and serves on faculty and advisory boards of Allergan, Novartis, and Pfizer. He travels nationally and internationally for educational and research activities.
