J. Perren Cobb, MD, is Professor of Surgery (Clinical Scholar) at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He serves as Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Keck Medical Center and Chief of the Surgical Critical Care Service Line. His distinguished academic career commenced at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was appointed Assistant Professor in the burn, trauma, and surgical critical care section of the Department of Surgery in 1995. Over the ensuing 14 years, Dr. Cobb advanced to the rank of full professor, holding a joint appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology. In 2009, he joined Harvard Medical School with joint appointments in the Departments of Surgery and Anesthesiology. In 2015, he relocated to the University of Southern California to assume his current professorship in surgery. Dr. Cobb completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at UPMC Medical Education from 1994 to 1995 and a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine (Internal Medicine) from 1989 to 1992. He earned his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.
Recognized as one of the preeminent experts in critical care surgery and medicine, Dr. Cobb is the founding director of the United States Critical Illness and Injury Trials Group (USCIITG) and leads the USC Critical Care Institute. These initiatives aim to enhance outcomes for critically ill and injured patients via transformative biomedical research and performance improvement. His research encompasses standardization of critical care data, ICU care processes, and responses to public health emergencies, including COVID-19. Key publications include "Extending the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model for Critical Care Medicine" (Critical Care Medicine, 2026), "Development of a Core Critical Care Data Dictionary With Common Data Elements to Characterize Critical Illness and Injuries Using a Modified Delphi Method" (Critical Care Medicine, 2025), "Guiding Principles for Data Sharing and Harmonization" (Critical Care Medicine, 2025), "Lessons Learned From a Systematic, Hospital-Wide Implementation of the ABCDEF Bundle" (Critical Care Explorations, 2023), and "Angiopoietin-Like4 Is a Novel Marker of COVID-19 Severity" (Critical Care Explorations, 2023). Dr. Cobb has contributed chapters on critical care to standard textbooks and delivered countless national and international lectures. He chairs the Board of Directors of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's Southern California chapter, advancing ICU care delivery nationwide.
