Dr. E. N. Jack Brookshire serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences at Montana State University, where his work centers on ecosystem ecology and biogeochemistry. He obtained his B.S. in 1997 and M.S. in 2000 from Oregon State University, followed by a Ph.D. in 2006 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Brookshire's research emphasizes nutrient cycling and limitation, nutrient dynamics in forests, atmospheric chemistry, global change, watershed analysis, stable isotope analysis, field experimentation, and modeling. He directs the Brookshire Lab Group, advises the Environmental Analytical Lab, and is affiliated with the Montana Institute on Ecosystems. Additionally, he contributes as a faculty advisor to the Ph.D. program in Ecology and Environmental Sciences.
Brookshire's scholarly contributions include key publications such as 'The greening of the Northern Great Plains and its relationship to soil phosphorus' in Global Change Biology (2020), which explores drivers of elevated plant productivity; 'Direct effects of temperature on forest nitrogen cycling revealed through analysis of long-term watershed records' (2011); and a study on long-term decline in grassland productivity in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (2015). His research has garnered over 4,100 citations, influencing understanding of ecosystem responses to environmental changes, including plant chemistry trends, afforestation in the Northern Great Plains, and interactions between herbivores, fire, and vegetation structure. Brookshire has received the Excellence in Research and Discovery Award from the Montana State University College of Agriculture, Faculty Excellence Grants, and support from the Murdock Charitable Trust's Partners in Science Program. He has presented seminars like 'Nutrient Limitation on a Greening Earth' and participated in Montana Agricultural Experiment Station project reviews.
