Dr. Jacob Hawkins is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Molecular and Life Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin University. He serves as Director of Graduate Research for the school and as Course Coordinator for the Bachelor of Agribusiness. Hawkins obtained his PhD in Agriculture and Resource Economics from the University of Western Australia, following his doctoral research there as part of the Institute of Agriculture. He joined Curtin University in March 2021 as Lecturer, advancing to Senior Lecturer in late 2025.
Hawkins' research specializations include agricultural economics, agribusiness, energy economics, environmental economics, input-output analysis, agriculture land and farm management, applied economics, climate change impacts and adaptation, and curriculum and pedagogy. His scholarly output features the editorship of the open textbook "Global Agricultural Sustainability & Food Security" (Curtin Pressbooks), co-authorship of "Programmatic assessment: a literature review of challenges, opportunities and useful tools to support student transition to the workplace" (Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, 2025), "ePortfolios for students in agriculture/agribusiness disciplines" (2023), "Using Group Collaborative Investigations to Develop Pasture Biomass Prediction Equations" (2022), and "Developing and Demonstrating an Augmented Reality Colorimetric Experiment in General Chemistry" (Journal of Chemical Education, 2018). With 395 citations on Google Scholar, his work impacts agricultural education and economics. Hawkins contributed to Version 2 of the Threshold Learning Outcomes for Agriculture and is recognized with his agriculture team for teaching excellence and producing industry-ready graduates, including acknowledgments from Curtin Molecular and Life Sciences and involvement in Australasian University Agriculture Education Awards nominations. He supervises higher degree research students and advances research in agricultural economics at Curtin.
