Jacques Malherbe is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Pathology and Laboratory Science within the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Western Australia (UWA). He currently serves as Senior Haematology Registrar and Advanced Trainee at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth, Western Australia, where he contributes to clinical care, teaching, and research. Malherbe completed his Bachelor of Science majoring in Neuroscience, Pathology, and Laboratory Medicine at UWA in 2012. He then obtained a Bachelor of Medical Science with first-class honours in 2013, investigating megakaryocyte pathobiology in myeloproliferative neoplasms under the supervision of Prof. Wendy Erber and Dr. Kathy Fuller. In 2017, he earned a Doctor of Medicine with Distinction from UWA and commenced practice as a clinical physician in Western Australia in 2018, holding roles including Junior Medical Officer at North Metropolitan Health Service from 2018 to 2022 and Senior Medical Registrar at Joondalup Health Campus since 2021. Since 2019, he has held an Adjunct Clinical Lecturer appointment at UWA, delivering haematology lectures and tutorials.
Malherbe has pursued translational research in haematological malignancies since 2013 through UWA's Translational Cancer Pathology Laboratory. His research interests encompass megakaryocyte biology and pathology, myeloproliferative neoplasms, myeloid disorders, leukaemias, plasma cell disorders, normal marrow haematopoiesis, and the application of digital enumeration technology to haematology diagnostics. He has authored multiple publications, including first-author papers such as 'COVID-19 outcomes in haemopoietic stem cell transplant recipients in Western Australia: the value of vaccination and antiviral therapy' (2024), 'Double trouble: A case of fraternal twins with iron-refractory iron-deficiency anaemia' (2022), and contributions to 'Imaging flow cytometric detection of del(17p) in bone marrow and circulating plasma cells in multiple myeloma' (2024) and 'Megakaryocyte emperipolesis in myeloproliferative neoplasms: are neutrophils friends or foes?' (2025). His work has garnered over 100 citations. Malherbe has received the Basic Physician Training DCE Educator Excellence Award at Fiona Stanley Hospital in 2022, 2023, and 2024, the Junior Doctor of the Month award at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in 2020, and a nomination for the Going the Extra Mile Rising Star Award in 2021. Earlier, he tutored Peer Assisted Learning sessions at UWA from 2012 to 2014.
