Jaena Alabi is Assistant Dean for Teaching, Learning, and Academic Engagement and a Professor at Auburn University Libraries, where she serves as the English and Psychology Librarian. She provides research support and instruction for English Language and Literature, Psychology, and is a core affiliate faculty member in African American and Africana Studies in the College of Liberal Arts. Alabi earned her PhD in Instructional Leadership from the University of Alabama in 2017, a Master of Arts in English from the University of Alabama, and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Alabama in 2005. Earlier in her career at Auburn University Libraries, she held the position of Reference Librarian.
Alabi's scholarship centers on academic libraries, diversity, teaching, and open access. Her highly influential publication, "Racial Microaggressions in Academic Libraries: Results of a Survey of Minority and Non-minority Librarians," appeared in The Journal of Academic Librarianship in 2015 and received the 2016 David Cohen/EMIERT Multicultural Award from the American Library Association for advancing understanding of multiculturalism in libraries. Other key works include "‘This Actually Happened’: An Analysis of Librarians’ Responses to a Survey about Racial Microaggressions" in Journal of Library Administration (2015), "From Hostile to Inclusive: Strategies for Improving the Racial Climate of Academic Libraries" in Library Trends (2018), "Addressing Psychosocial Factors with Library Mentoring" in portal: Libraries and the Academy (2017), "Peer review of teaching: Best practices for a non-programmatic approach" in Communications in Information Literacy (2014), and "The Complete Guide to Using Google in Libraries: Instruction, Administration, and Staff Productivity, Volume 1" (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2015). She has contributed to university governance by presenting on title changes for Auburn University Librarians and Archivists to the faculty senate steering committee and has participated in library initiatives such as Love Data Week.
