Dr. Jalal Mohammed is a Senior Lecturer (Above the Bar) in the School of Health Sciences within the Faculty of Health at the University of Canterbury, a position he has held since January 2023. He holds a doctoral degree in public health focusing on health systems and several master's degrees in Public Health, Education, and Business Administration. Prior to joining the University of Canterbury, Mohammed served as Acting Head of the Department of Public Health at Auckland University of Technology from June to December 2022, Senior Lecturer from August 2019 to December 2022, and Lecturer from July 2016 to August 2019. During his time at AUT, he was Programme Leader for the Bachelor of Health Science in Health Management from January 2017 to August 2021. Earlier, he held multiple roles at Fiji National University from November 2006 to July 2014, including Lecturer, Programme Coordinator, and Head of Department for Health Services Management in the School of Public Health and Primary Care.
Mohammed is an award-winning academic and health management and leadership specialist with nearly two decades of experience in higher education and public health. His research interests encompass health systems, access to health services, telehealth utilization, and public health challenges for Pacific populations. Key publications include 'Decentralisation of health services in Fiji: a decision space analysis' (2015), 'Post pandemic analysis on comprehensive utilization of telehealth and telemedicine' (2024), and 'Mental health status and coping strategies of Chinese university students during the COVID-19 pandemic: A rapid review' (2023). He has secured research grants totaling approximately NZD 5.2 million. Notable awards and honors include the ACHSM-Aotearoa Silver Fern Award, Faculty of Health Teaching Award from the University of Canterbury, Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award, Fellowship and Certified Health Executive (FCHSM CHE) from the Australasian College of Health Services Management, and Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Research and Development Society Australasia. Mohammed holds leadership positions such as Adjunct Professor at the University of Fiji, Executive Member of the Aotearoa Fiji Research Collective, Founder and Convenor of the Pacific Online Learning and Teaching Network, and member of the National Council of the Public Health Association of New Zealand. He has contributed to projects for the United Nations Development Programme and World Health Organization in the Pacific region.
