James Lindsay is the Director of Campus and Collegiate Life Services at the University of Otago. Born and educated in Scotland, he possesses nearly 30 years of experience in hospitality and institutional management within the New Zealand education sector. In this capacity, he leads a team accountable for the operation, development, and enhancement of the university's residential colleges, student accommodation options including UniFlats, and broader campus life services. His office is situated at Black/Sale House, 100 St David Street, Dunedin. James Lindsay holds the designation of Justice of the Peace (JP) and has played a pivotal role in the evolution of accommodation services into the comprehensive Campus and Collegiate Life Services division.
Under James Lindsay's direction, significant milestones have been achieved, including the official opening of Te Rangihīroa College in October 2023, the first new residential college at Otago in over 50 years, which bolsters the university's sustainability commitments. He has spearheaded food waste reduction efforts, transforming waste from college dining services into high-quality compost dubbed 'black gold.' During the COVID-19 pandemic, he coordinated daily welfare checks for staff and wardens via Zoom, ensuring continuity and support for residential communities. James Lindsay oversees warden professional development, chairs relevant committees and working groups, and supports academic research initiatives such as mindfulness meditation studies conducted within colleges. The division's communications team received the 2018 Collegiate Award during his tenure. His contributions extend to fostering a positive evolution in student culture, including policies on alcohol consumption and remuneration for residential assistants.
