James Rae is the Multimedia Producer for the National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement (NMSSA) within the Educational Assessment Research Unit (EARU) at the University of Otago's College of Education. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Design Studies and a Diploma in Graduate Design Studies. Rae has been associated with EARU since his graduation over 15 years ago, dedicating his career to supporting educational assessment initiatives through multimedia production. His primary focus encompasses desktop publishing, website construction, computer application development, digital video editing, and cross-platform integration, all tailored to the needs of the NMSSA project.
Rae's contributions are prominently featured in a series of national educational monitoring reports produced by EARU. He is credited as Multimedia Producer in multiple National Education Monitoring Project (NEMP) reports, including Report 31: Graphs, Tables and Maps (2003), Report 34: Reading and Speaking (2004), Report 35: Information Skills (2005), Report 46: Graphs, Tables & Maps (2007), Report 48: Aspects of Technology (2008), Report 49: Reading and Speaking (2008), and Report 36: Social Studies (2005). Additionally, his work appears in NMSSA Mathematics and Statistics (2018), as well as contextual reports such as English: Reading 2014 Contextual Report and Māori Student Achievement in English: Reading. These reports, developed in collaboration with the New Zealand Ministry of Education and other partners, provide critical insights into student achievement across various curriculum areas. Based on the Dunedin campus, Rae continues to play a vital role in enhancing the presentation and accessibility of educational research outputs through his technical expertise.
